About Course

Inadequate airway management is one of the leading causes of adverse events and mortality in emergency and critical care settings. Despite its importance, traditional medical training offers limited structured practice in orotracheal intubation and airway rescue strategies.

The Emergency Airway Management (VIAMURGEM) course was developed by Dr. Fernando Sabia Tallo, in scientific partnership with SECLIN, to train physicians and healthcare professionals to approach airway management in a safe, systematic, and evidence-based manner.

With a strong practical focus, the course covers everything from initial airway assessment and patient preparation to rapid sequence intubation, rational pharmacologic choices, clinical algorithms, and rescue strategies, preparing participants to act confidently in real-life high-complexity scenarios.

What Will You Learn?

  • Perform a systematic airway assessment and identify difficult airways
  • Plan and prepare for safe orotracheal intubation
  • Apply airway management algorithms in emergency settings
  • Select and use sedatives, analgesics, and neuromuscular blockers appropriately
  • Perform rapid sequence induction and intubation safely
  • Use supraglottic airway devices as alternatives or rescue strategies
  • Recognize failed intubation scenarios and apply contingency plans (Plan D)
  • Make fast and effective decisions in critical airway situations

Course Content

MODULE 1 — Foundations of Emergency Airway Management
This module establishes the anatomical, physiological, and clinical foundations of airway management in emergency settings. Participants will understand the importance of initial assessment, proper preparation, and safe decision-making before any invasive intervention.

MODULE 2 — Airway Algorithms and Pharmacology
This module focuses on the application of clinical airway algorithms and the rational use of medications. Participants will learn to choose the most appropriate strategy based on the clinical scenario, improving safety and procedural predictability.

MODULE 3 — Advanced Intubation Techniques
This module explores advanced intubation techniques, with emphasis on rapid sequence intubation and the use of supraglottic devices. Participants will develop technical reasoning to act safely in high-risk and complex situations.

MODULE 4 — Rapid Sequence Intubation and Practical Application
The final module integrates theory and practice, focusing on the correct execution of rapid sequence intubation and consolidation of knowledge through clinical cases and practical workflows.
